📖 This Week's Story

Today we're going to learn about our beautiful Maronite Easter traditions! Easter, or Pascha as we call it, is the most important celebration in our Church. It's when we celebrate Jesus rising from the dead! In our Maronite tradition, we prepare for Easter during the special time called Lent. Our families fast and pray together for forty days. Then comes Holy Week, when we remember Jesus's last days on earth. On Palm Sunday, we wave palm branches just like the people did when Jesus entered Jerusalem! Can anyone tell me what special things your family does during Holy Week? On Holy Thursday, we remember the Last Supper. On Good Friday, we pray the Stations of the Cross and remember Jesus's sacrifice for us. Then comes the most joyful day - Easter Sunday! Our Maronite churches are filled with beautiful decorations, flowers, and candles. We sing 'Qam al-Masih' - Christ is Risen! Our families gather for a special Easter feast called 'Eid al-Qiyama.' We eat delicious foods like ma'amoul cookies filled with dates and nuts, and colored eggs that remind us of new life. We wear our best clothes and exchange gifts. What's your favorite Easter tradition with your family? The most beautiful part is when our priest chants the Easter liturgy in Aramaic, the same language Jesus spoke! We light candles and process around the church, celebrating that Jesus conquered death and gave us eternal life. Remember, children: Easter isn't just about Easter eggs and treats. It's about celebrating that Jesus loves us so much that He died for us and rose again. Through our Maronite traditions, we connect with Christians who have celebrated this way for over 1,600 years!
